Course Description:

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a complex motor speech disorder that requires precise assessment, thoughtful differential diagnosis, and highly individualized intervention. This comprehensive course provides clinicians with the knowledge, tools, and practical strategies needed to begin to identify, evaluate, and treat CAS across early childhood.

We will begin by establishing a clear, functional definition of CAS and exploring its hallmark characteristics, focusing on how motor planning and programming deficits differentiate CAS from dysarthria, phonological and articulation disorders. Through the use of detailed video examples, participants will observe real clinical presentations and gain a deeper understanding of observable speech behaviors that inform diagnostic decision-making.

From there, the course guides clinicians step-by-step through the evaluation process. Participants will learn how to conduct and interpret an informal dynamic motor speech assessment, select appropriate therapy targets, and write meaningful, achievable goals tailored to the child’s motor-speech needs.

Intervention strategies will highlight a range of evidence-based approaches, with a strong emphasis on motor-based methods such as Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC). Clinicians will learn how to integrate play-based practice, high-repetition motor learning principles, and individualized cueing hierarchies to support successful movement gestures for speech. Multi-sensory cueing techniques—including visual, tactile, gestural, and auditory cues—will be introduced with guidance on how to embed them seamlessly into therapy.

To support real-world application, participants will view a variety of treatment videos featuring preschool and early school-age children engaged in CAS therapy. These examples bring the learning to life by showcasing planning, cueing, error shaping, and therapy intensity in action.

By the end of this course, clinicians will feel empowered with a clearer diagnostic process, improved confidence in identifying CAS characteristics, and a practical toolkit of therapy strategies that can be implemented immediately with young children.
